Tooth loss is a very serious problem that carries with it, many detrimental effects, and the more teeth you lose, the greater the impact. Eating and speaking become more challenging. Your digestion and nutrition suffer. Tooth loss also has a significant impact on your smile and your facial aesthetics. Following tooth loss, your teeth need to be replaced. At Parker Dental Implant and Specialty Center, we can replace an entire arch of missing teeth with complete dentures.

What Are Complete Dentures and What Do You Need to Know About Them?
A complete denture is a traditional restoration that is provided to replace an entire arch of teeth. The denture is removable, meaning that it can be taken out and put back in at will. It can be used to replace the top teeth, bottom teeth, or even both. This restoration consists of false teeth that are set into a base.
The base is made to sit directly on your gums, and it relies on this tissue for support. Today, the teeth are made from either acrylic resin or porcelain, and the base is made from acrylic. The base is designed to match the color of your natural gum tissue. Complete dentures today provide a much more realistic appearance, helping to give you back a more natural smile while improving the functions of your mouth.
Getting Your Complete Denture
Before a complete denture can be provided, we first need to extract any failing teeth that are still in the arch. Following your extractions, we take an impression of your mouth. This impression is used to custom create your complete denture, which is done in our dental lab. Once your denture is finished, we check to make sure that it fits properly and feels comfortable. If there are no adjustments required, you leave with your brand-new teeth.
Caring for Your Complete Denture
Your complete denture will require special care to keep it functional as long as possible. It is important that you remove it every night to clean it thoroughly. Before taking it out, make sure that you lay a towel down over the sink, or fill the sink with water to provide a cushion in case you drop it.
After taking out your denture, use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and denture paste to gently clean it. Rinse your denture and then place it into a glass of water you have set aside, or a denture cleaning solution. Your denture should remain in the water overnight while you sleep, out of reach of small children and pets. After cleaning your denture, make sure that you take care of the rest of your mouth. In the morning, after taking care of your mouth again, rinse your dentures thoroughly and place them in your mouth. If your dentures become damaged, make sure that you schedule an appointment right away.
Over time, you may notice that your dentures do not fit properly anymore. This occurs because your jawbone gradually loses bone mass after tooth loss. While a complete denture replaces many of the functions of your missing teeth, it cannot provide your jawbone with stimulation. As a result, the bone weakens and begins to change shape. When you notice your denture no longer fits properly, it is important to schedule an appointment. It may be time to replace your denture.
A complete denture provides an effective way to replace a full arch of missing teeth, improving the functions of your mouth, your smile, and your quality of life. For more information, and to discuss your options, contact Parker Dental Implant and Specialty Center at (720) 522-2000 today.
