WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CROWN AND A VENEER?

A Veneer is a thin, custom-made thin shell that is bonded to the front of tooth to improve it’s appearance. Veneers can fix a variety of dental issues, including: Chips, Cracks, Gaps, Tooth discoloration, Crooked teeth, Misshapen  or worn teeth, and Uneven spaces between teeth.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap or covering that's custom-made and permanently cemented over a natural tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

Crowns can be used to treat a variety of dental issues, including:

  • Decayed or broken teeth: Crowns can improve the look of decayed or broken teeth and make them stronger.

  • Weak or worn-down teeth: Crowns can support weak teeth.

  • Dental implants: Crowns can replace missing teeth using an implant as an anchorage in the bone.

  • Root canal-treated teeth: Crowns can prevent teeth breaking after a root canal.

Veneers fall under the PARTIAL COVERAGE RESTORATION CATEGORY. Partial coverage restorations are conservative and only replace the structure of the tooth that is missing using composite or ceramics. In comparison to Full Coverage restoration where they replace the all sides of the visible tooth.

Partial coverage restorations mainly rely on adhesive bonding to the tooth, whereas full coverage restoration relies on the tooth geometry underneath the crown and surface available for bonding.

Partial coverage restorations include:

  • Veneers - covers only the front or the back of the front teeth

  • Veneerlays - covers the top surface of the back teeth as well as the front surface

  • Onlays - covers the top surface of the back teeth

  • Inlays - covers the missing portion of the inside of the tooth

Biomimetic dentistry

Partial coverage restorations represent conservative, organic  dentistry well because they are merely replacing what was missing Mimicking Biology, not invading it, but rather preserving the remaining tooth structure. It is far more kind and gentle. SEE BIOMIMETIC DENTISTRY.

Partial coverage restorations are more affordable in comparison to Full Coverage Restorations like crowns, since the laboratory fabrication costs are lower.

Our team will make sure the fit is optimal, as a well-fitted crown helps minimize sensitivity. If discomfort persists, we can offer solutions to improve your comfort.
  • Will my dental crown look different from my natural teeth?
Our crowns are custom-made to match the shade, shape and translucency of your natural teeth, blending seamlessly with your smile. We prioritize both function and aesthetics, ensuring the crown complements your existing teeth.
  • What happens if my crown becomes loose or falls off?
If your dental crown loosens or falls out, it is essential to contact our office promptly. Our dentist will examine the crown and underlying tooth to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate fix. Re-cementing the crown or adjusting the fit can often resolve the issue.
  • Is anesthesia required when getting a dental crown?
Anesthesia is typically used during the initial procedure to ensure your comfort while the tooth is being prepared. In some cases, anesthesia may also be applied when placing the permanent crown. We prioritize patient comfort and will discuss anesthesia options with you beforehand.
